Cynthia Folio’s When the Spirit Catches You is one of those rare artistic creations that offers a real glimpse into the human condition— more specifically, into the experience of one who suffers from seizures, and the existence that surrounds it. Commissioned by Relâche, Folio’s multimedia work combines music, visual effects and spoken word to tell the story of her daughter’s lifelong experience with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex and her journey through the stages of frequent seizures, the technology involved in discovery and treatment, and the mindset of one who lives to wait for the next episode. This landmark composition is among the most important in our repertoire, and has been presented in conferences for medical professionals and behavioral scientists as a true depiction of this experience.
In this program, Relâche will also show the other side of experience: after years of performing individually and collectively, we love to put our years of work to the test and try something new. So, we’ll take some original, jazzy tunes from the Phantasma Trio (featuring our own Chris Coyle and Ron Stabinsky) and pair them with dance in a spontaneous, one-of-a-kind way.
